What is Canine Iris Sphincter Dysplasia?

Canine Iris Sphincter Dysplasia (ISD) is the result of poorly developed iris sphincter muscles that do not properly contract in bright light. The disorder exposes the interior of the eye to ultraviolet light that potentially may cause serious vision problems, such as cataracts or retinal damage, as the dog ages.

Because eye diseases are often progressive, the OFA recommends annual eye examinations.
